Letters from Iwo Jima 2006 American war movie

War Movies

American war movies very rarely deal with the reasons behind why the nation fought against United States, in most cases because they would have to show the real reasons why USA joined some of the wars, but when it comes to World War 2 they make exception, especially for Japan. Such titles as Tora! Tora! Tora! or Midway were showing the both sides of the conflict, Clint Eastwood returned to that tradition with Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima.

American forces are closing on Iwo Jima, small and seemingly insignificant volcanic island, but during the war value of the land changes completely. And that is the case with Iwo Jima, it is a first Japanese mainland island to be attacked in World War 2, which means the defenders will have to fight for the first time on their own soil. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi was appointed the new commander of Iwo Jima garrison, but even the first inspection of the defences shows him how big challenge he has to face - the supplies are very limited, the morale is low, the island has no natural covers. He has small amount of planes, artillery, some infantry, few tanks that are immobilised due to lack of spare parts, but all of it is not enough to match the power of Marines that will soon attack the island. Kuribayashi comes up with completely different defence plan...

American movie showing the Japanese side of the Battle of Iwo Jima, which comparing to American suffering seems far worst. The script was based on actual letters found on Iwo Jima years later by the archaeologists, who were able to reconstruct the state of mind of the defenders. A unique look at the battle.
